Heretic ambient sounds are global sound sequences. They use a custom SoundSequence actor and the HereticAmbience slot defined in SNDSEQ. Since these sounds are global, the positioning of the things in the map does not matter. In the original Heretic maps, the level designers tended to group them together neatly in an area out of the way, outside of actual map geometry.
For a world or surround ambient sound, the position of the thing in the map does not matter. It can be a good idea to use the same approach as the Heretic level designers and leave them out of map geometry so that they do not interfere with the placing of other map things.
