Jul 01, 2015 · Hello, I own a Dell Precision M6800 laptop equipped with the stock GS40N DVD writer. When powering on the system the DVD drive makes a loud noise as if it is trying to load a disk while there is no disk present in the drive bay. The noise disappears if I leave a disk inserted and power on the system, but this is hardly a solution for the issue.

In the meantime, I’d suggest you to reload the sound driver and see if that fixes the issue. Follow these steps: a. Open Device Manager. b. Select “Sound, video and game controllers “and expand the same. c. Highlight the driver, right-click and select “Uninstall”. d. Restart the computer.
May 13, 2012 · There are two potential problems. First, sometimes a loose connection to the drive will cause this to happen. Open your case and remove both the power and data cables to the drive then plug them back in. The second cause is a bad tray sensor. To fix that, you need only call Dell for a replacement drive. But check the connectors first.
If a disc isn't seated correctly, or a foreign object was put in the drive by a child, it can cause the drive tray to randomly eject. Shine a flashlight in the drive to determine if a disc or other object is stuck in the drive. If a disc is stuck in the drive try using a pair of needle nose pliers and remove the disc.Dec 30, 2019

CD problems may result in resonance-vibrations in CD-ROM drive. The CD will Vibrate Slightly when reading the disk at a high speed, and CD-ROM drive may resonate with the CD. To disable/enable the CD/DVD drive in Device Manager: Right click on Computer -> Properties -> Device Manager. Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives, right click on the drive and select Disable.

Check for sources of interference. Try disconnecting the power cord from any such nearby electronics (i.e. laptop/phone charger, TV, cable box, seasonal lights, microwave, etc.). If the issue is resolved, try connecting the device or your product to a different power circuit or farther away.
You can disable the device from the Device Manager without opening its Properties window by right-clicking the device and choosing "Disable" from the context menu. To re-enable the drive, open the Device Manager, open the drive's Properties window, select the "Driver" tab and then click the "Enable" button. Click "OK."
Go to “User Configuration” > “Administrative Templates” > “Windows Components” > “File Explorer“. Open the “Remove CD Burning Features” setting. Set the policy to “Enabled” to disable disc burning. Set it to “Disabled” or “Not Configured” to allow disc burning.
Unfortunately the feature is hard coded within the operating system and you cannot disable it. The concept behind this is that you would click on the CD/DVD drive only when you need to access it. As such it auto ejects the drive if it's empty so that you can insert a disk.Mar 12, 2016
