It was produced by Cadillac between 1951 and 1954 and marketed successfully to the United States Army as a replacement for its aging fleet of World War II vintage M24 Chaffee tanks.
The T-54 and T-55 tanks received full gun stabilisation in 1956 with the STP-2 Tsyklon stabiliser system (from D-10 tank gun). The STP-2 stabilised the main gun in both horizontal and vertical planes.
