CmdrJonen Fanatic Xenophile. I always figured Gaia world's - be they in Stellaris or MoO - were worlds where the ecosystem was curated and moderated to some degree by a planetary consciousness (or subconsciousness, since the concept of self aware planets does occur in Stellaris/mods).
