Setting up CC on a TV differs by manufacturer but will look something like this:
Turn Captions On or Off Using the X1 Accessibility Settings Menu. Press the B key on your Xfinity remote to reach Accessibility Settings. Press OK to toggle Closed Captioning On or Off. If choosing On, then proceed to Closed Captioning Options and select your preferred settings (font size, color and formatting).
Using the arrow keys, navigate to Setup and press OK/Select on the remote control. Navigate to Closed Captioning Setup using arrow keys and press OK/Select. (On some TV Boxes, this may be called Subtitle Setup instead. You may have to press the down arrow to navigate to the second menu screen to find this item.)
Press the Xfinity button on the remote control. Using the right arrow, navigate to the settings gear icon. Using the down arrow, navigate to the Languages menu. Press Ok to change Closed Captioning: Off to Closed Captioning: On. Navigate to the Close Captioning Options below Closed Captioning On/Off to change the style, font, color, opacity ...
Using the remote, scroll/page right until the "CC" icon, which will appear at the bottom right corner of the screen, is selected. This is how your CC toggle looks when selected but still turned off: Hit Select (or the middle of the scrollpad on your remote). The CC icon will turn orange. This is what it looks like when it's toggled to the On position:

Closed captions (CC) are different. They are designed specifically for the hard of hearing who would not otherwise be able to follow the audio track on screen. The text will include the dialog like subtitles but will also contain other audio cues depending on what’s going on.
Closed captioning differs from subtitles in a major way. On the surface they may look the same but if you’re one of the millions of Americans who have difficulty hearing, you will know that they are completely different systems for completely different uses. Subtitles are useful for the hearing impaired but are actually designed for translation.
If you don’t use the X1 but have a different box, the setup will be slightly different. As far as I know, only the X1 has the voice remote so you will have to use the standard remote and menus to turn closed captioning on or off. The actual closed captions will work in exactly the same way but getting to them is different.
Subtitles are useful for the hearing impaired but are actually designed for translation . For those for whom English is a second language, subtitles are designed to offer written translation in your native language so you can follow the dialog on screen.
The Xfinity X1 is a popular streaming box that comes with a voice remote. This makes it doubly useful for accessibility as you can use voice commands to control the system or standard remote control commands.
Connect the "HDMI to TV" port on the cable box to the HDMI port on your TV. You can use the HDMI cable that came with the box, or any other HDMI cable. Make note of the HDMI port that you use on your TV so that you can easily switch to it later. Many Comcast cable boxes have multiple HDMI ports.
Comcast will not activate used cable TV boxes. All cable boxes are property of Comcast, and all used cable boxes available for sale are unauthorized. You should only receive cable TV boxes directly from Comcast.
If the online activation service isn't working, you can activate over the phone: Have your account number and cable box serial number handy. If you have digital adapters, have the serial numbers for those ready as well. Call 1-855-OK-BEGIN (1-855-652-3446).
Connecting a digital adapter is pretty much the same as a regular cable box. Use a coax cable to attach it to the wall outlet, and HDMI or coax cable to connect the adapter to the TV, and then connect the power adapter. Make sure all of your digital adapters are connected and powered on before starting the activation process.
Turn on the cable box. If you cable box has a Power button, press it to turn it on. Some cable boxes will take up to 20 minutes to warm up for the first time.
Wait for Your Gateway or Modem to be Ready. Your Gateway or modem may take up to 10 minutes to be ready to activate.
After activation, connect your devices to your WiFi name and password for your home network, if your Gateway or modem supports a wireless connection. If you replaced your Xfinity Gateway and kept the same settings during activation, your previously connected devices should automatically reconnect.
If you're prompted to enter a PIN instead of a password, click the Connect Using a Security Key link to enter the password in the Security Key field. Connect through an Ethernet cable. Plug the Ethernet cable into one of the open ports on your Gateway or modem until it clicks.
If you’re activating Xfinity Voice service without Xfinity Internet, activating a pre-installed Xfinity Gateway in your WiFi-Ready apartment or your mobile device does not support the Xfinity app, you can use the steps below. Note: These steps apply to both Xfinity equipment and approved owned equipment.
